Temperature in Vietnam in February

Want to know, What are the temperatures in Vietnam in February?

The weather in Vietnam in February is pleasant across the entire country. The northern region’s average temperature of 16°C (60°F), means it is chilly, particularly in the mornings, but pleasant for exploring outside. As you move towards the center, temperatures rise slightly to a comfortable 22°C (72°F), meaning the coast is starting to heat up and you might get some solid beach time in. While the southern areas have the warmest conditions, averaging 28°C (82°F), it’s hot but not so hot that you can’t be outside.

No matter where you are headed, check the Vietnam weather for that destination. BUT, be prepared for the weather forecast to be incorrect! It is quite common for the forecast to say one thing and then it is completely different! There are plenty of weather apps, obviously.

Accuweather is your best bet for updated weather information to stay up to date with the weather in Vietnam in February. Take note that weather.com doesn’t work in Vietnam.

If you are in Hanoi, it is worth giving The Hanoi Weather Dude a follow – he is a local legend of sorts and, I find, is the most accurate predictor of weather around!

Air Quality in Vietnam in February

It may not be something that you would even think to check before going on vacation, but the air quality in Vietnam is worth looking into before you plan your trip.

For some context, Vietnam is currently facing significant air pollution challenges. In 2021, it ranked 36th out of 118 countries for having the dirtiest air. Both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the two largest cities, made it to the top 15 polluters in Southeast Asia. The main contributors to this problem are vehicles, factories, construction, agriculture, artisanal production, and inadequate waste management. You can read more about the Air Quality in Vietnam through the World Health Organization.

Now, a week-long vacation in Vietnam will likely not give you any long term health effects. However, it might contribute to the enjoyment of your trip. When the air is particularly bad, you can feel it, see it, and smell it. If you have underlying health issues like asthma it might be smart to make sure you have medicine, or make sure you wear a mask.

I, personally, do not get super affected by the air. I can definitely see it and feel it when it is bad, but I don’t have coughing fits or feel ill like a lot of people. I feel it the most in my eyes (contact wearer) and need to use significantly more eye drops on bad air days.

When talking about the air quality, you will hear people refer to the AQI. That stands for Air Quality Index. There are color ranking and number rankings as well:

In general, the air gets worse in the winter months (December – March). Air is always the worst in Hanoi, no matter what time of year.

Apps and Websites will tell you the air quality for the day- I recommend IQAir.

Lunar New Year in Vietnam

People Riding Motorcycle on Road

February in Vietnam is a special time to visit, as it’s a whirlwind of preparation and excitement for Tet – the Vietnamese Lunar New Year.

Imagine the festive spirit of Christmas in the West, then dial it up with a Vietnamese twist. The end of January and the beginning of February is all about the Tet hustle: families busy buying decorations, choosing the perfect kumquat or peach blossom tree, wrapping up traditional Vietnamese Tet food, and cooking up a storm.

Tet celebrations vary from north to south. While southerners often embrace the holiday with trips and social outings, the northerners lean into the warmth of family reunions, rushing back to their hometowns

How does Vietnam Celebrate the Lunar New Year?

Tet is a time of significant cultural importance. The country transforms as it prepares for the new lunar year. Streets in the North are lined with yellow Hoa Mai blossoms, while the South displays pink apricot flowers, each representing new year’s hopes.

Homes buzz with families making traditional dishes like Banh Chung, symbolizing cultural heritage. Markets become lively with shoppers, setting the stage for the quieter days of Tet.

During the holiday, cities like Hanoi experience a rare calm as locals exit the cities to head back to their family homes. Tet in Vietnam is a period where family reunions and the celebration of new beginnings take center stage, reflecting the nation’s values and traditions.

Best Places to Celebrate Tet in Vietnam?

Three main places particularly stand out for their unique celebrations during Vietnamese Lunar New Year. Each offering a different perspective as a tourist.

  1. Hanoi, the capital, offers a blend of tradition and festive markets. The streets are adorned with peach blossoms, and the Old Quarter buzzes with excitement. This is for you if you want to experience a traditional way of celebrating the holiday.
  2. Ho Chi Minh City presents a more modern Tet experience. The city is known for its vibrant nightlife during the festival, with fireworks and street parties, especially around Nguyen Hue Street, which is transformed into a flower market. This is for you if you want to party and celebrate in a more modern and festive way.
  3. Hoi An, with its lantern-lit streets and riverside festivities, offers a charming setting. The ancient town is a blend of quiet, traditional celebrations and lively night markets, making it a perfect spot for those looking to experience the full spectrum of Tet festivities in a more relaxed atmosphere. This is for you if you want a celebration geared with tourists in mind.

Considering a Hanoi February trip?

February in Hanoi is like the city waking up from its winter snooze. It’s when the weather starts to mellow out, hinting that spring is just around the corner.

The city is a bit dark and misty this month, with only a couple of hours of sunshine peeking through each day. Rain? Yep, a bit more than January, but it’s mostly light showers. And with the humidity chilling at around 73%, the air feels just right – not too dry, not too damp.

Looking for the best things to do in Hanoi in February?

With the mild temperatures, going on a walking tour or biking tour around Hanoi is a great way to see the city. You should also absolutely check out the markets, as locals are still preparing for Tet at the beginning of the month.

Wondering, What is the Hanoi Temperature in February?

The Hanoi temperature in February hovers around the 16°C (60°F) mark. Days are chilly but pleasant with temperatures dropping as low as 10°C at night, and increasing to 23°C during the hottest part of the day.

What to wear in Hanoi in February?

Since temperatures fluctuate, you’ll definitely want to pack layers if you’re coming to Vietnam in February. What to wear in Hanoi in February would typically involve t-shirts and pants with light sweaters or jackets, especially for evenings and rainy days – don’t forget that sweater on your Vietnam Packing list!

Ho Chi Minh in February

A rooftop infinity pool overlooks a bustling cityscape at sunset, with the sky painted in shades of orange and blue. Palm trees in the foreground add a tropical touch to this urban oasis, highlighting a serene escape amidst the city's expanse

Ho Chi Minh City, or Saigon, is a busy city and popular tourist destination all year, but if you’re looking to beat the heat somewhat, then February is another good month to visit this southern city.

The weather in Ho Chi Minh in February is dry, sunny and warm. It is sunny almost all days, and hot, but pleasant and manageable temperatures.

Ho Chi Minh Temperature in February

The Ho Chi Minh temperature in February typically ranges from 23°C to 34°C (73°F to 93°F), providing slightly cooler relief compared to other months. If the heat affects you, then this is the month to come to Saigon!

For those wondering what to wear in Ho Chi Minh in February, light clothing is sufficient for the daytime, while a light jacket may be beneficial for cooler evenings if you are someone that gets chilly in that lower temperature. You will likely be totally fine without a jacket.

Da Nang in February

Breathtaking view from a hillside vantage point overlooking a serene tropical beach in Danang,Vietnam. The crystal-clear turquoise waters gently kiss the golden sands, while lush greenery cascades down the mountainside, inviting relaxation and exploration

Da Nang and nearby Hoi An are in the central regions of Vietnam, and by the end of February are officially out of the rainy season. Unlike northern Vietnam, the central regions have two seasons: rainy and dry.

The weather in Da Nang in February is pleasant, and the temperatures range  from 19°C to 23°C (66°F to 73°F). It is not quite hot enough to spend the days laying on the beach (at least for me), but the temperature is enjoyable and will let you be comfortable while exploring outdoors!

Da Nang is less touristy compared to its neighbor, Hoi An. But it is my favorite city in all of Vietnam. I love that there is a beach, mountains and a city all within the same boundaries!

As for the question of what to wear in Da Nang in February, light daytime attire is appropriate, but packing a jacket or sweater for the evenings is advisable – add that to your Vietnam packing list.

Hoi An in February

A string of colorful traditional Vietnamese lanterns fluttering in the breeze above a beachfront. The backdrop features a sandy beach in Hoi An, Vietnam with people enjoying the sun, and a calm ocean extending towards a hazy mountain horizon under a clear blue sky.

Hoi An, just a 30 minute drive from Da Nang, means the weather is the same as in Da Nang. Hoi An is like Da Nang’s more touristy, more traditional Vietnamese neighbor.

If you’re headed to Vietnam in February, and the central region is on your radar, you will likely hit both of these cities. And though close, they have totally different vibes.

Hoi An is quaint and charming with a well preserved old town perfect for photos. Da Nang is a bigger city, where tall buildings sit on the beach road. Two totally different vibes worth checking out!

February is the start of the best time to visit Hoi An (Feb-May are top times), and if you travel at the beginning of February, you will catch the decorations and celebrations from Tet.

Temperature in Hoi An in February

The temperature in Hoi An in February ranges from 19°C to 23°C (66°F to 73°F).  The rain is significantly less than January, though there may still be some  rainy/cloudy days. By the end of the month though, there will be much less rain.

Phu Quoc in February

A peaceful coastal scene in Phu Quoc, Vietnam with multiple traditional boats floating on clear turquoise waters. A red railing with circular cut-outs lines the foreground, framing the view of the calm sea and a hilly island in the distance under a bright blue sky.

If it is a Beach holiday you are after, consider Phu Quoc. It is less touristy for foreigners than other places in Vietnam, but it’s getting more popular! And February is a sweet time to visit.

The Weather in Phu Quoc in February is dry and mild, with consistently sunny days. The dry season in Phu Quoc started in December and continues all the way until March, so February is right in the safe zone for great weather.

Phu Quoc Temperature in February

The temperatures range between 25°C and 28°C (77°F to 82°F). It is comfortable for sightseeing, beach activities, and exploration. Since it is the dry season, the ocean is also more calm, making it a good time to swim.

When it comes to what to wear in Phu Quoc in February, light and breathable attire is suitable for the daytime, while a light wrap or a sweater can be useful for the cooler evenings.

In February, it is harvest season for peppers! You can check out a pepper farm and see how the pepper goes from tree to processed pepper in your kitchen. Phu Quoc Pepper is a good gift to bring back from Vietnam as well!

Phu Quoc is an island – don’t forget to add sun hat, sunscreen and sunglasses to your Vietnam packing list to protect against that tropical sun.

Halong Bay in February

Man Standing And Facing Ha Long Bay in Vietnam. He is looking out over green limestone karsts that dot the blue water.

Halong Bay is just a quick 2.5 hour drive, or 30 minute sea plane flight, from Hanoi. And despite the fact that it is one of the most popular places in Vietnam, I still think it should be on every Vietnam itinerary.

The Weather in Halong Bay in February is similar to Hanoi in that you will find cool temperatures and not too much  rainfall. With low humidity and rainfall, it will be pleasant to explore outdoors, however it isn’t the most ideal time to sunbathe on a Ha Long Bay Cruise.

Halong Bay Temperature in February

The Halong Bay Temperature in February typically ranges between 15°C and 20°C (59°F to 68°F), making it cooler than many other regions in the country.

You will need to bring warm clothing like jackets and sweaters, especially for the evenings. However, during the day, lighter layers will be fine.

It is likely too cold to jump into the water, but if you are coming from a cold destination, maybe it will be perfect for you!

Sapa in February

Panoramic view of the lush, terraced hills of Sapa, Vietnam, with patches of cultivation and dense greenery. Misty clouds swirl around the peaks of the mountains, creating a majestic and tranquil landscape under a dynamic sky.
This is my absolute favorite picture I have ever taken of Sapa. It was with my iPhone, and I love it so much I got it printed and hung in my house!

If you’re looking to experience an actual winter in Vietnam, with cold temperatures Sapa should be on your travel list.

February is chilly, cloudy and foggy in Sapa, but it adds an almost magical charm to this mountain town. There isn’t a ton of sunshine, and many days will have a bit of misty rain, but by the end of February it will start to clear up.

We can say this is what the typical weather in Sapa in February is like, but this month is actually quite unpredictable. It is likely it will be foggy, but you also might catch a warm sunny day!

It isn’t the best time to catch the stunning views of the rice fields, but as the mountain city starts to get read to transition to spring, some peach and plum blossoms may start to pop out.

Sapa Temperature in February

Yes, it gets cold in Vietnam! The Sapa temperature in February ranges 8°C – 14°C (46°F- 57°F). With the unpredictable weather, it is still possible to maybe catch some snow in the highest parts of Sapa, like Fansipan  Peak.

This cold climate means you need to pack warm clothing! You might not think you need a sweater and winter hat for Vietnam, but I recommend bringing them if Sapa is on your itinerary in February! Sturdy shoes or boots are good if you are planning on doing any trekking.

Da Lat in February

Overlooking a dense tapestry of residential and commercial buildings in Dalat, VIetnam, the photograph captures the urban landscape's varied architecture under a cloudy sky, with mountains faintly visible in the background.

Dalat Weather in February has cool temperatures with not much rain. It is one of the driest months of the year, though it does get occasional misty rain (similar to Hanoi).

In February 2021, I spent some time in Da Lat. At night we were able to make a fire outside and sit wrapped up and cozy, but during the day long pants and a t-shirt were fine.

Dalat Temperature in February

The Dalat Temperature ranges from 16°C to 20°C (60°C to 68°C), with mornings and evenings significantly cooler than the daytime.

When considering what to wear in Dalat in February, you should pack both warm and light clothing. During the day, when the sun is out, light layers will be fine. However, as evening sets in, temperatures drop significantly, and you might want to have a jacket or sweater.

Nha Trang in February

Coastal view of a sandy beach in Nha Trang, Vietnam lined with palm trees in the foreground and a vast, calm ocean extending to a hazy mountainous island in the distance. Overcast skies suggest a tranquil, overcast day at a tropical destination
This is the view from The Intercontinental in Nha Trang, a great choice for a beachfront hotel in the city.

The weather in Nha Trang in February follows suit from December and January and continues to drop temperatures a bit. It is probably the coldest month of the year, but the rainy season is coming to an end, and there is less rainfall this month.

Nha Trang Temperatures in February

With temperatures generally ranging from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), it is comfortable, far from the sweltering heat of the tropics yet not as chilly as the northern regions.

Wondering what to wear in Nha Trang in February? You’ll likely spend a good chunk of time on the beach, so swimsuits, obviously. But also pack a mix of light clothing for the daytime and a light jacket or sweater for the cooler evenings would be good.

Ha Giang in February

A water buffalo stands prominently in the foreground on a lush hillside in Ha Giang, Vietnam, with another grazing in the background. The surrounding landscape is a tapestry of verdant rolling hills and distant mountains, shrouded in a light mist, showcasing the rural beauty of the region

In Ha Giang, February continues to be chilly, but by the end of the month it is starting to warm up. It is mostly dry and sunny, making it a good time to motorbike the Ha Giang Loop. Even though the rice terraces have been harvested,  the scenery is still some of the best in all of Vietnam, with foggy mornings and blue skies.

This period also sees fewer tourists, allowing you to immerse yourself in the authentic culture and customs of Ha Giang without the crowds. If you come during Tet, you may be able to participate in some local village celebrations which will be much different than what you see in bigger cities.

Ha Giang Loop Temperature in February

It starts to warm up a bit in Ha Giang this month, generally temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F). With the sun out, the daytime is cool and comfortable for outdoor activities such as trekking or motorbiking. As the sun sets, temperatures can drop significantly.

If you are motorbiking the Ha Giang Loop in February, you need to pack warm clothing such as insulated jackets, gloves, and thermal underlayers. Did you know that you can stock up on North Face Gear in Hanoi? Check out my list of my favorite shops to buy from.

Despite the cold, the clear skies and less rain during this month make it a solid time for visitors to explore the Ha Giang Loop’s landscaping if you are okay with colder temperatures!

Yes – February is a solid time to visit Vietnam! Vietnam in Februrary means mostly sunny days, and cooler temperatures all across the country.

If you want to try and completely avoid rain (though that is likely impossible), stay away from the northern region and stick to the south .

In February, Vietnam experiences a varied climate across its regions. The northern areas can be cool and sometimes chilly, while the southern coastal regions maintain a tropical climate with temperatures.

In February, Vietnam experiences varying weather conditions. In the northern regions (Hanoi and the surrounding areas), it can be cool with occasional rain, so pack lightweight layers, a light jacket, and an umbrella. In central areas (Hue, Da Nang), the weather is pleasant, so bring comfortable clothing, swimwear if you plan to hit the beaches, and sunscreen. In the south (Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta), it’s warm and humid, so pack lightweight, breathable clothing and mosquito repellent. Is it safe for solo female travelers in Vietnam during February?

Vietnam is generally considered safe for solo female travelers. However, it’s essential to take common-sense safety precautions. While most interactions are friendly, it’s always wise to trust your instincts and avoid risky situations.

Are there any specific cultural norms or dress codes I should be aware of as a woman in Vietnam?

Vietnamese society is relatively conservative, though changing pretty quickly. I wear shorts and tank tops and bikinis in Vietnam and have never felt uncomfortable or out of place.
