What is a Hanoi Night Market?
A night market in Hanoi is simply that. A Night.Market.In.Hanoi. They start gaining traction once the sun goes down, turning streets into hubs of activity. These markets have various stalls selling clothes, household items, street food, souvenirs, and local handicrafts.
The night markets in Hanoi are filled with the sounds of haggling, the smells of cooking, and the sights of locally made goods. Locals and tourists visit these markets to shop, eat, socialize, and immerse themselves in the local culture and traditions.
Walking through a night market in Hanoi will give you a pretty cool view into the city’s everyday life.

Why Visit a Hanoi Night Market?
If you have browsed through my Ultimate Hanoi Travel Guide, you’ll know that exploring the markets of Hanoi is one of the top things to do in the city. The markets during the day are excellent, but I personally think it gets even more interesting once the sun goes down! Hanoi’s famous night markets are a great place to experience the culture, as well as a few other activities:
- Explore the Street Food Stalls: Hanoi night markets are a delicious. There are tons of local snacks to try! to try. From Pho to Banh Mi, the options are endless.
- Shop for Local Crafts: Hanoi’s night markets are filled with stalls selling local handicrafts and artwork. This is a perfect opportunity to pick up unique, souvenirs and support local artisans (be aware though, a lot of the stuff you’ll find here is cheaply made in China).
- Experience the Culture: From traditional music performances to puppet shows, the night markets offer a chance to explore Vietnam’s rich cultural heritage.
- Capture the Moments: The colors, hustle and bustle, and energy of the night markets make for great photography.
- Try Bargaining: No night market experience is complete without some friendly haggling. Not only can you score a good deal, but it’s also a fun way to interact with the locals.
Explore the Street Food Stalls
One of my favorite things about a Hanoi night market is the food. From sweet potatoes and sweet corn to sticky rice and treats made from rice papers, anything you eat will make you happy.
As you walk through the streets of Hanoi (both during the day and at night markets) you’ll come across many food stalls. From steaming bowls of pho with fresh herbs and beef, to flavorful banh mi sandwiches packed with pickled veggies and spiced meats, there’s something for everyone.
Don’t let stories of food poisoning put you off, I have been living in Hanoi for nearly 10 years and have NEVER gotten sick from street food. There are, of course, ways to make sure you’re picking the most sanitary foods – check out where I actually eat street food in Hanoi.
Find Local Crafts
One of the special things about Hanoi’s night markets is the wide variety of local crafts available. The stalls are filled with handmade goods, showcasing the talent and creativity of Vietnam’s artisans. You can find items like woven silk fabrics, bamboo products, embroidered items, and beautifully painted ceramics.
In full honesty, most of the knick-knacks sold at the night markets are mass produced. They are cool souvenirs to take home, for sure! If you are looking for something that is more unique or special – check out my list of unique souvenirs to bring back from Vietnam(coming soon).
Experience the Culture
These busy hubs that come alive after sunset, offer more than just shopping. As you stroll through , you’ll be immersed in the sounds of bargaining and the laughter of people enjoying street-side snacks.
Depending on the time of year, and which night market you go to, you may catch traditional cultural shows and musical performances.
The market is a sensory feast with its colors and enticing (or not so enticing) scents. Street performers add to the lively vibe, blending traditional tunes with the market chatter.
Whenever I stroll by a night market in Hanoi I make sure to meander through the stalls. All these years of living in this city, and I still enjoy the noisy, sensory overload of a night market.
If you like the lively atmosphere – give Ta Hien Beer Street a visit!
Capture the Moment
I find that sitting back and snapping photos is one of my favorite things to do in a Hanoi Night market. Take photos of the stalls piled high with food, the vendors calling out to passers-by, kids running up and down the streets, or the emotions on people’s faces as they discover treasures.

Try Your Hand at Bargaining
Bargaining is more than just an economic transaction; it’s a cultural norm and a playful exchange that is deeply ingrained in the local shopping culture.
It may seem absurd to negotiate something that only costs $5, and sometimes it is, but it is quite fun to go back and forth with a vendor on prices.
They expect you to negotiate the prices, and a successful bargain often leaves both you and the vendor happy. I can’t even count how many times I have countered on a price offer, only to go back and forth many times, and both of us ending in laughter. Plus, it’s a fun way to interact with the local people, learn a bit of Vietnamese, and immerse yourself deeper in the city’s culture.
However, remember to bargain respectfully, keeping in mind that for many vendors this is their primary source of income. There are, of course, vendors who are going to attempt to scam you. This article will take you to some of the most common scams to look out for.
Some words to know for bargaining:
Bao nhiêu? = How much? (say it: bow (like the front of a boat) nyoo)
đắt quá! = Too Expensive! ( say it: dot qua)
4 Best Night Markets in Hanoi
There are tons of markets all over the city, though most are busy in the morning and later in the afternoon.
You’ll see lots of lists that have tons of night markets all over the city. Those lists seem to just list every neighborhood night market in the city. You can totally check them out, but honestly, as a tourist there are only these four main night markets to go to:
- Old Quarter Night Market aka Hanoi Weekend Night Market: Stretching from Hang Dao Street to Dong Xuan Market, filled with shops selling traditional Vietnamese products such as silk, jewelry, and ornaments.
- Quang Ba Flower Market: A must-visit for flower lovers, open from 2 AM until the break of dawn. Here, local florists come to buy their stock, and the variety of colorful, fresh flowers is simply mind-boggling. It is very cool to experience during the Lunar New Year.
- Long Bien Market: The most vibrant wholesale fruit and vegetable market in the city, opening up at midnight.
- Dong Xuan Market: The largest covered market in Hanoi, offering a wide array of products from delicious food to clothing and home decor.
Old Quarter Night Market aka The Hanoi Weekend Night Market

The Old Quarter Night Market is in the (surprise, surprise!) Old Quarter Neighborhood where the main streets come alive every Saturday and Sunday night, offering a variety of items at affordable prices.
From Hang Dao Street to Dong Xuan Market, you’ll find a mix of locals and tourists exploring the narrow streets lined with shops selling traditional Vietnamese goods and food. Hoan Kiem Lake is in the center of the OQ, right next to the Hanoi Weekend Night Market, and is a gathering place for the young and old and a hub for foreign tourists seeking a taste of local life. Stay in the Old Quarter for the weekend market.
Unlike some of the other night markets in Hanoi, the Hanoi Weekend Night Market is a tourist magnet, but you will still see hoards of local Vietnamese walking the streets. Despite the tourist draw, don’t be surprised to see locals shopping for household goods or enjoying a meal from the seemingly endless array of food stalls.
Location: Hang Dao Street, Hang Ngang Street, Hang Luoc Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi
Opening Times: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 6pmish-11pmish
Quang Ba Flower Market

The Quang Ba Flower Market in Hanoi is the largest flower market in the city, and doesn’t get going until about midnight (and continues on until the early hours of morning). You will be greeted by a variety of colors and piles of flowers creating a refreshing aroma, punctuated by the blaring horns of motorbikes, of course.
But it’s not just about the flowers – it’s a cultural experience, a lively dance of buyers and sellers surrounded by colorful blossoms. Keep in mind, this is where most of the wholesale of flowers get sold, so it’s not really geared toward tourists. You will likely be ignored by many vendors as they try to make bigger sales. And even though the piles of colorful flowers are cool to see, it is a buzzing market with mud and garbage and motorbikes and yelling!
This is by far my favorite night market in Hanoi, and if you want to see it easily you should stay in Tay Ho (I live just down the road!). A visit to the Quang Ba Flower Market promises an experience that reveals a unique aspect of Hanoi’s culture. I make sure all of my visitors make it to this market!
Opening Times: Everyday from 8pm-7am (busiest between 1am-4am)
Location: 236 Au Co Street, Quang An Ward, Tay Ho District
Long Bien Night Market

The Long Bien Night Market, located under the historic Long Bien Bridge, is a spot in Hanoi that comes alive after sunset. Unlike the touristy markets, this one is more popular among the locals. You can find everything from fresh produce to clothing and household items at reasonable prices. It has this raw vibe that tourists don’t always get to see.
You’ll watch vendors promoting their products, customers bargaining, and a range of items that offer a look into Vietnamese daily life. A visit to the Long Bien Night Market gives you an authentic experience of Hanoi’s nightlife.
I like this market because of its location under the Long Bien Bridge. It is just a cool spot for a market!
Hours: 10pm-6am (busiest around 1am)
Location: Đ. Hồng Hà, Phúc xá, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam
Dong Xuan Market

The Dong Xuan Market is one of the biggest markets in the city. Located at the top end of the Old Quarter. During the day, it is a place to buy pretty much anything you need – from brooms to underwear to knock off purses to chickens.
On the weekends, the market stays open into the night, in particular the streets surrounding the market turn into a center of activity. You’ll find a whole range of stalls offering everything from clothes and accessories to a wide variety of local delicacies.
The best part about this Hanoi night Market is the street food being freshly prepared well into the night. Food vendors serve up steaming bowls of pho, delicious skewers of barbecued meats, and local desserts. Even if you’re not in the mood for shopping, taking a nighttime stroll through Dong Xuan Market gives you a real taste of the local culture of Hanoi.
Hours: 6am – 10.30pm-ish on weekends
Location: No.15, Cau Dong Street, Dong Xuan Ward, Hoan Kiem District
Essential Tips for Visiting Hanoi Night Markets
When navigating the night markets in Hanoi, there are a few tips to consider:
Bargaining & Money
Bargaining is a common practice, so don’t hesitate to negotiate the prices. As a foreigner, you will absolutely be quoted at a much higher price than a local. Start about a third or half of the seller’s asking price and work from there. Make sure to have small change handy as vendors might not have enough for larger bills. It is possible that learning a few basic Vietnamese phrases will also come in handy, particularly when bargaining.
Pay Attention to Your Things
This goes without saying in any busy market in any city. Pay attention! In general, Hanoi is very safe and likely nothing will happen, however keep an eye on your belongings. If you have a purse or backpack, put it on your front. And don’t be obnoxious about waving your phone around.
Pay Attention to Your Surroundings
What makes Hanoi Night Markets unique are that even if the roads are closed to traffic, I guarantee motorbikes (and probably cars) will make their way through. Watch where you are walking because it is very likely a motorbike might come buzzing past you! If you want to learn how to cross the street without panicking, go read this post.
Have an Open Mind
Lastly, bring an adventurous spirit and an open mind. The night markets are busy and cool and can be a bit overwhelming, but they are also filled with surprises, rich experiences, and local flavors waiting to be discovered.
Final Thoughts on Hanoi Night Markets
The night markets in Hanoi have something for everyone. They are an ideal place for cultural immersion, a place to enjoy the rich cuisine, and the perfect spot for finding unique souvenirs at a reasonable price. Visiting a night market in Hanoi is definitely one of most interesting things to do.
